Teams will develop systems that turn clean energy into gasoline replacements.
The Department of Energy (DOE) distributed $41 million to 14 projects developing various methods to turn renewable energies into liquid fuel replacements for gasoline, diesel, and oil. Each project focuses on researching different sources to produce these liquid fuels, which include carbon captured from the air, methanol, and hydrogen. Many of these projects also use solar and wind power to generate electricity for their studies.
“With today’s announcement, the Department of Energy charges forward on its mission of finding and elevating new technologies to ensure that the United States remains innovative and energy independent,” said Secretary Jennifer Granholm. “Renewables-to-liquids fuel production has the potential to boost the utility of renewable energy all while helping to lay the groundwork for the Biden-Harris Administration’s goals of creating a clean energy economy.”
